AS91245: Explain aspects of a contemporary New Zealand geographic issue
The forestry slash issue is a powerful case study for geography students because it brings together natural hazards, land use, environmental sustainability, and community wellbeing—all in one issue. It shows how human actions, like large-scale exotic forestry, interact with natural events like cyclones to produce serious consequences. Studying this issue helps students explore real-world tensions between economic development, environmental protection, and the rights of local communities in Aotearoa.
The assessment can be completed with pen and paper using the printed resource booklet, or completed on your school’s digital platform with the help of an attractive online version of the resources. Students will describe the forestry slash problem affecting the Tairāwhiti / East Coast region, explain the different viewpoints around it, evaluate three courses of action to address the issue, and justify one to move forward with.
